About IEC and SRC

The Scientific Review Committee (SRC) and Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) of the Institute is a group of experts and scientists convened by the research institute to evaluate and provide feedback on scientific research proposals, manuscripts, or grant applications. The primary purpose of an SRC is to ensure the quality, validity, and ethical standards of research in various fields of study. It aims to protect the dignity, rights, and well-being of the potential research participants with an emphasis on human rights.

The other objective includes; ensuring that the universal ethical values and international scientific standards are expressed in terms of local community values and customs. It also will assist in the development and education of a research community responsive to local healthcare requirements.

The Institutional Ethics Committee at present is a group of healthcare professionals, lawyers, and members of the community, who come together to advise and make recommendations on ethical issues arising in the delivery of healthcare.

The main goal of a medical ethics committee is to ensure that healthcare practices are consistent with ethical principles and standards. The committee provides guidance on complex ethical questions such as end-of-life decisions, informed consent, confidentiality, allocation of limited healthcare resources, and research ethics. IEC helps healthcare providers to navigate difficult ethical dilemmas and make informed decisions that respect patient autonomy, protect patient privacy, and promote the best interests of the patient.

In summary, the ethics committee plays a crucial role in ensuring that healthcare practices are guided by ethical principles and standards, and in promoting fairness, justice, and respect for patient autonomy in healthcare decision-making.

As an “Institution of National Importance,” there is a remarkable increase in biomedical research and the number of research projects carried out. This involves a number of ethical issues which need to be addressed. To facilitate the smooth functioning of the Scientific Research Committee (SRC) and Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC); an online system for application submission has been developed and implemented. The Institutional Ethics Committees of SCTIMST play the vital role of guiding researchers in the ethical issues associated with their research.
